Teacher Profiles
Mrs. Patty Phillips
Degrees and schools attended: California State University , Hayward (now named Cal State East Bay ) BA Music Performance
Chapman University – CA Teaching Credential
How many years have you been teaching music?
I’ve taught public school for 16 years. I taught privately starting in high school and then off and on until I started teaching publicly.
Primary instrument/s:
Clarinet, saxophone
Do you currently play/perform with any local music organizations/groups/bands/orchestras?
I do not currently perform regularly. I play at church now and then. I was a member of the Solano Symphony for about 10 years until I got too busy. I’ve played a lot of jazz in Vacaville over the years and hope that someday I will have a schedule relaxed enough to allow me to participate in some group, jazz, orchestra or band, on a regular basis again.
Which Vacaville schools do you teach at? grade level? band? orchestra?
I am primarily at Jepson where I teach four classes (three bands and one jazz band) each day. Then I go to Hemlock, Orchard and Markham in the afternoons. I teach primarily woodwinds, but have students playing trumpet and trombone as well.
What do you love the most about music?
I love it because it’s so familiar. I love the passion and goose bumps I feel when music is played really well. I love that music in the schools provides a PLACE for so many of our kids. I love that music connects the 2 sides of the brain more and better than any other activity. I love we can start to be involved in music as a youngster and continue as older people.
Can you share a musical moment that has special meaning to you in your life?
When I was pregnant with our son in 1982, we went to the ballet in San Francisco . I love ballet because it has such spectacular music AND you have something wonderful to watch at the same time. We were seeing Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet for about the 3rd time. There’s a spot in that ballet, toward the beginning, where each section of the orchestra adds a chord to the overall chord, building more and more until the percussion and everyone just goes crazy loud. I love that spot. Well, that place came in the piece and at the climax of the crescendo, Kevin did a complete flip inside of me! It was amazing and I’ll never forget it….
